The 2010 Enumeration places the populace at 43,381. The township was organized in 1842, formed out of a portion of Macomb Township.

Chesterfield Township was originally established as a general law township in 1842, and became a Charter Township in 1989. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the township has a total region of 30.7 square miles (80 km2), of which 27.9 square miles (72 km2) is territory and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) (9.07%) is water.

In the first decade of the 21st century, much of Chesterfield Township is dominated by subdivisions, shopping developments, and an increasingly diverse population, in contrast to previous decades when the improve was considerably more non-urban and overwhelmingly white.

Chesterfield Township is bordered on the north by Lenox Township and the village of New Haven; on the east by Ira Township and New Baltimore; on the southeast by Anchor Bay, which is a part of Lake Saint Clair; on the south by Harrison Township; and on the west by Macomb Township.

Anchor Bay Gardens is positioned off Jefferson Avenue at Sunrise Street and Jans Drive (42 38 34 N 82 48 45 W; Elevation: 571 ft./174 m.). Anchor Bay Harbor is positioned on Jefferson Avenue south of Anchor Bay Gardens between Sugerbush and Cotton roads (42 39 19.1 N 82 47 56.7 W; Elevation: 577 ft./176 m.). Anchor Bay Shores is positioned off Jefferson Avenue, south of Anchor Bay Harbor between William P.

Chesterfield is positioned on M-3 from 23 Mile Road to 22 Mile Road.

Chesterfield Shores is near the border with City of New Baltimore north of Jefferson Avenue and south of M-29/23 Mile Road (42 40 12 N 82 45 41 W ; Elevation: 587 ft./179 m.). Fairchild was positioned in the southern portion of the township.

In 2002 they moved their manufacturing out of the United States to China, however Chesterfield continues to the locale of their corporate offices, and non-manufacturing support functions.
