The city's name is a misspelling of John Lawson's name, a small-town settler. Clawson began in 1829 and was originally known as Pumachug and The Corners.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.20 square miles (5.70 km2), all land. At the 2010 census, there were 11,825 citizens , 5,460 homeholds and 2,992 families residing in the city.

There were 5,460 homeholds of which 23.5% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 4.1% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 45.2% were non-families.
