As of the 2010 census, the town/city population was 10,945. It is the governmental center of county of Branch County, positioned in the center of the southern border of Michigan.

The town/city is positioned at the center of Coldwater Township, and it is politically autonomous.

The region of Coldwater was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi at the time of European encounter.

Settlers did not move into the region until around 1830, with many arriving from New York and New England, the northern tier of states. Coldwater was incorporated as a village in 1837, and then incorporated by the council as a town/city in 1861. It was designated in 1842 as the governmental center of county of Branch County. The Coldwater River flows into the town/city from the south, originating from Coldwater Lake.

The Coldwater chain of lakes also has an supply called the Sauk River, which flows from its north end (near Quincy) and then through the south side of the town/city of Coldwater.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 8.27 square miles (21.42 km2), of which 8.03 square miles (20.80 km2) is territory and 0.24 square miles (0.62 km2) is water. There are an average of 8.5 days with highs of 90 F (32 C) or higher and an average of 145.2 days with lows of 32 F (0 C) or lower.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 92.5% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 3.2% from other competitions, and 2.7% from two or more competitions.

There were 4,255 homeholds of which 34.9% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 6.7% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 38.2% were non-families.

27.2% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 9.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.3% were from 25 to 44; 23.4% were from 45 to 64; and 15% were 65 years of age or older.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 85.35% White, 8.42% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.52% from other competitions, and 3.01% from two or more competitions.

There were 4,058 homeholds out of which 32.9% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 37.9% were non-families.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older.

The Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater was assembled in 1882; it is the second-oldest theater in Michigan.

The Wing House was assembled in 1875; it is now directed as a historical exhibition by the Branch County Historical Society. The Little River Railroad offers rides behind a 1911-built steam locomotive, departing from the city's historic depot. Aside from the usual enhance and parochial schools, Coldwater has a branch of Kellogg Community College and Baker College.

Coldwater enhance bus transit is provided by Branch Area Transit Authority (BATA).

Coldwater has airways broadcasts WTVB and WNWN-FM, whose studios are positioned south of town on Business Loop 69 that are part of the Kalamazoo radio area.

There are no tv stations transmitting from inside the county; Coldwater gets its tv signals from the Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids-Battle Creek and Lansing-Jackson SMSAs in Michigan.
