It is the governmental center of county of Hillsdale County, and is run as a council-manager government.
The town/city is the home of Hillsdale College, a private liberal arts college noted for its academics and its influence in politics and education.
The town/city is situated mostly inside Hillsdale Township, but is a municipality governed autonomously of the township.
According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 6.19 square miles (16.03 km2), of which, 5.92 square miles (15.33 km2) is territory and 0.27 square miles (0.70 km2) is water. The Saint Joe river begins in Hillsdale, near Lake Baw Beese, a primary body of water in this city, around which is situated a several parks and a beach.

Hillsdale College, established in 1844, relocated to the town/city of Hillsdale in 1853.
In the late 1800s, Hillsdale was a booming barns town, but this came to an end when the last passenger train left Hillsdale in 1956.
In 1921 it opened its first hospital and in 1934 Hillsdale Municipal Airport opened. Hillsdale has one primary roadway passing through it, Michigan highway 99 ( M-99).
Highway 99 joins to Highway 12 just over a mile north of Hillsdale.
