It is the governmental center of county of Livingston County and is positioned mostly inside Howell Township, but is politically autonomous from Howell Township.
Howell is home to many celebrations celebrated through the year.
The town/city is also the site of the Howell Melon Festival, an annual celebration of the Howell melon, a juicy hybrid cantaloupe known to expanded only in the encircling area.
A newer tradition, Howell hosts the annual Pink Party, a day to recognize breast cancer survivors and raise cash for donations.
