It is the governmental center of county of Alger County. The town/city is adjoining to the northwest corner of Munising Township, but is administratively autonomous.

The name for the town/city comes from the Ojibwe word for "island at". A postal service was established as the Munising postal service on December 22, 1868.

He was a German-born American Civil War veteran and first Supervisor of Munising Township.

Munising is positioned on the southern edge of Munising Bay at 46 24 40 N 86 38 52 W, also known as the South Bay of Grand Island Harbor, athwart from Grand Island around the mouth of the Anna River.

It is the major embarkation point for cruises to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Island National Recreation Area.

The name Munising is derived from the Ojibway language.

Grand Island is positioned one half mile north in Munising Bay.

The Munising region has many waterfalls including Alger Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Memorial Falls, Munising Falls, Miners Falls, Scott Falls, Tannery Falls and Wagner Falls.
