The first permanent postal service in the region was established in 1840 by William Rose who titled it the Roseville Post Office with respect to his father Dennison Rose, a veteran of the War of 1812.

The Village of Roseville was incorporated in 1926 and the Municipal Building was constructed in 1929 at Gratiot Avenue and Meier Road.

This replaced the Erin Township Building that was assembled near the corner of 11 Mile Road and Gratiot in 1886.

City offices remained in the building until 1974.

In 1958, the village and remaining parts of Erin Township were incorporated as the City of Roseville.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 9.86 square miles (25.54 km2), of which 9.83 square miles (25.46 km2) is territory and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water. Between 10 and 12 Mile Roads, it forms the boundary between Roseville and St.

M-3, which is Gratiot Avenue (/ r t/; titled after engineer Charles Gratiot) runs northeast and southwest, and (roughly) bisects the town/city as it wends from Detroit to Mount Clemens and points north.

East west travel is mainly on the mile roads, that is 10 Mile Road on the south (Eastpointe, formerly known as East Detroit) border through 14 Mile Road on the north border.

Utica Road is an meaningful diagonal connector that criss-crosses the town/city from southeast to northwest, starting at Gratiot Avenue (near Martin Road, or 11 1 2 Mile Road) and extending to the city's northern boundary at 13 Mile, then to Fraser, Michigan, Clinton Township, Michigan, Sterling Heights and Utica beyond.

Roseville is positioned inside the 39th Judicial District with the City of Fraser.

In January, 2017, police officer Kevin Keary wrote resident & citizen Taylor Trupiano (a/k/a Nick Taylor on Facebook) a citation for warming up his car in his driveway amid a cold Michigan morning, against a town/city ordinance. When Taylor posted a photo of the ticket on his Facebook page, the photo quickly went viral.
